Edmonton Government Plaza Wins 2024 Infrastructure Minister’s Awards for Innovation in Equality
The Edmonton Government Plaza Rejuvenation Project was awarded the 2024 Infrastructure Minister’s Award for Innovation in Equality. The award was accepted by Chris Lane, SVP and Area Manager, last night at the Infrastructure Partners Conference in Edmonton.
Built in the late 1970s, the Legislature Grounds and existing outdoor pool had reached a point of requiring extensive renovationsin order to be accessible to the public. The area has been redesigned into a hybrid space to incorporate three water features consisting of a new reflecting pool, an ornamental dome fountain, and four connected terraced pools.
There was an immense focus on creating barrier-free spaces to ensure wheelchair accessibility, using durable and timeless materials, and salvaging existing site materials for reuse within the new design. Phase 1 of the project, which included the reflecting pool, was completed on time and officially opened up to the public on Canada Day this year. Phase 2 of the project will see construction completion in Spring 2025.
Alongside GEC Architects, EllisDon is humbled to have accepted this prestigious award and looks forward to the completion of the project. Thank you to our Client, Alberta Infrastructure, for giving us this fantastic opportunity.
